A tertulia is a Spanish tradition — a group of people who gather to talk. About anything. About everything. We pick a theme each week: current events, a philosophical question, Mexican culture, a debate. The rule is simple: only Spanish, the whole time. It's uncomfortable. That's how it works.

Anthony Mullis has been living in Mexico since 2020 and building NLA since 2021. He's not just a Spanish teacher — he's learned 6 languages himself using the same method he teaches.
I grew up in rural Ohio, studied Spanish Linguistics at university, and moved to Mexico in 2020 and have been here ever since — surfing, training Brazilian jiu-jitsu and boxing, rock climbing, and teaching Spanish to English-speaking expats and digital nomads who want to actually live their life in Mexico.
I started NLA in 2021 because I kept meeting people who'd been in Mexico for years and still couldn't hold a conversation. Not because they weren't smart or motivated — because every tool available was built for passive consumption, not active production. Apps. YouTube. Textbooks. All of them teach you to recognize Spanish. None of them teach you to speak it.
The NLA method is production-first. You speak from day one. You make mistakes, get corrected in real time, and try again. It's uncomfortable at first and it works.
I know this method works because I've used it myself. I learned French (B2), Portuguese (B2), Italian (A2), German (B1), Arabic (B1) — all to conversational fluency — and I'm currently working on Norwegian. I know what it feels like to be stuck at every stage, and I know exactly what it takes to get unstuck.
About the School
NLA was founded in 2021 with one belief: the only way to learn a language is to use it. We run live group classes, private sessions, a self-paced online course, an AI conversation coach, and in-person immersion experiences — all built on the same production-first methodology.
More than 100 students from 8 countries have come through NLA. The goal is always the same: get you speaking Spanish in real life, as fast as possible, without wasting your time on things that don't work.
